John Gomez

January 23, 1975 ~ June 18, 2022 (age 47) 47 Years Old

Tribute

John Gomez, Jr, age 47, of Fort Lauderdale Florida, passed away at his home on June 18th, 2022 of natural causes.

John was born on January 23rd, 1975 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. His parents, John Gomez Sr and Elisa Franco-Fry, moved with John to the United States in his early childhood and eventually settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. John became a big brother to Daniel in 1980. John attended Westminster Academy and later Cardinal Gibbons High School, both in Fort Lauderdale. John was a notable wrestler, an average student, and a great friend and teammate. He loved working on his Mustangs and DJing. He was well known in South Florida as DJ Kryptonite with the FLDJs. John was a devoted Florida Gator, having attended the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and received Bachelor of Science in Recreation. He went on to Nova Southeastern University where he obtained his Masters in Physical Therapy.

It was at the University of Florida where he met Cindy Scales. They would later date for several years and marry on November 23, 2013. Their courtship was initially long distance between Fort Lauderdale and Atlanta, GA. Their dedication to and love for each other was evident as John and Cindy spent countless hours driving to be with one another as often as possible until Cindy returned to Fort Lauderdale. Their oldest son Aidan was born in 2008. Their second son, Dylan was born in 2012.

After his boys were born, John was completely devoted to their upbringing. It quickly became evident his boys would be gifted athletes. Although they excel in all sports, they gravitated toward baseball. John was a constant fixture at every practice and game. He became the “voice” at the games, diligently putting together the walk-up music and announcing the names of the players on his son’s teams. John was simply an amazing and wonderful father to his boys, instilling in them the values of hard work, and how to be a good friend and teammate. He led by example and invested every spare moment he had into raising them up to be strong young men.

John worked as a Physical Therapist for 19 years at North Ridge Hospital and at Holy Cross Hospital. He was a well-loved and respected colleague to many.

John enjoyed working on his car and keeping it immaculately clean. He also loved collecting clunky watches and loved loud music. Although short in stature, he was easy to identify in a crowd due to his extensive collection of bright-colored shoes. John was quiet and reserved, but always had a great sense of humor. He was always ready with an opportune joke, usually at his brother’s expense.

John was loved by and is survived by Cindy (Scales) Gomez, sons Aidan (13) and Dylan (9) Gomez, his parents, John Gomez Sr (Betty Gomez) and Elisa Franco-Fry (Hunter Fry), his brother Daniel Gomez (Melissa Gomez), step-brother Aaron Gilliam, and step-sister Kristie Gilliam. He was a wonderful uncle to Alexander, Cecilia, Christopher and Benjamin Gomez, Gabriella and Dominic Gilliam and Christian Gilliam. He is also survived by his grandmother Lali Fernandez Amores, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who reside in Spain, Colombia, and the United States. John will be remembered fondly and missed by many coworkers, neighbors and friends, especially his long-time, devoted friend Alex Powell. John will be sorely missed by his dog Frankie.

As a family, we are deeply thankful for the outpouring of love and support we have received over the past few difficult days. It is a testament to the kind of man John was, known and loved by many.
