EUGENE FRANCIS “HUEY” VANEK
Eugene “Huey” Vanek, 97, succumbed to COVID on May 14, 2022. Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Frank
and Dorothy Vanek, Huey spent his childhood in Hillside, New Jersey. Huey served in the Pacific Theatre
during World War II as an Army radar technician in the Leyte Gulf. His career was spent in the leather
and dry-cleaning business in both New Jersey and Florida. Since the 1950s, Huey has lived in Ft.
Lauderdale. Much of Huey’s spare time was spent traveling the world with his late wife Viola (“Vi”)
showing Cherry Pop, their world champion Persian long haired cat, “the fabulous redhead,” in
competition.
Huey was predeceased by his parents, his sister Gertrude Meyer and his wife, Viola. Huey is survived by
his niece Lynda Foster of Palm Harbor, nephew Ron Meyer (Judy) of Tallahassee, and niece Sharon
Perkins (Larry) of Palm Harbor, Florida, as well as grand nephews, great grand nephews and a great
grandniece.
At Huey’s request, no services will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, his many friends and animal lovers are encouraged to make contributions in his memory to a local animal shelter or other charity which assists animals in need.
