Bertram H McLarty (Mr Mac) was born in Kingston, Jamaica West Indies to Ellen and James McLarty. He was one of twelve children. As a young man he attended Durham Commercial College on East Street, Kingston. After his studies, he worked as an office clerk at Justin McCarty Bookstore and at Simon Caribbean Crafts until he emigrated to the United States in 1955. While in Jamaica, he played for Lucas Cricket Club.
At age 23, he met and married his wife Sylvia Shand on April 8, 1945. They were blessed with four children Valerie, Courtney, Denise and Althea. In 1956, the fifth child, Francine was born.
In the 1960’s, Bertram started working for Paramount Pictures, a Gulf and Western Company, as a building maintenance technician until retirement. Mr. Mac relocated to Orlando, Florida in 1988 where he lived for 21 years. In 2009, he moved to Fort Lauderdale to be close to family.
He was an avid sports fan and loved watching baseball, football and golf on TV. In Orlando, he joined a bowling league and also played Bocci. He enjoyed spending time with his family, going to parks and outings on the weekends.
He is survived by his wife and five children, seven grandchildren: Simone, Stephanie, Jeanine, Nerissa, Gregory, Jonathan and Nathaniel, great-grandchildren: Khyreed, Kiara, Troy, Isla and Cullen. One great great-granddaughter Kairo, many nieces, nephews, son-in-laws, daughter-in-law and numerous friends.
He will be greatly missed.
