Tribute

It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Raj Karottukunnel, who departed from this world too soon on April 4, 2024, at the age of 40. Born in New Jersey on February 11, 1984, to Mathew and Annies (Chackungal) Karottukunnel, Raj spent the majority of his life under the warm sun of South Carolina, a place he deeply cherished and considered home. After graduating from Dutch Fork High School, he completed his Theater Arts Degree at Winthrop University. He then went on to pursue a career in acting while living in NY, Chicago, and Atlanta.

Raj was a luminous presence, known for his unshakeable positivity and infectious joy. He showed equal care and devotion to both his relatives and close friends. He was fiercely protective and supportive of his “fam” and always available when they needed him. His daughters, Annabelle and Sophia, were the light of his life. Despite their youth, Raj's boundless love and optimistic spirit have instilled in them a resilience and warmth that will guide them as they navigate the world without him. His legacy, embodied in their character and actions, will continue to touch lives just as he did.

He is survived by his parents, Mathew and Annies; his daughters Annabelle Jo and Sophia Rose Karottukunnel and their mother Michelle Wingard; his sister, Rejani Nedumchira, brother-in-law, Jose (Sujo) Nedumchira; and their children, Anna Clara and Daniel. The void left by his absence is immense, but the family finds solace in the joy and love he spread so freely.

Raj's passion for acting was more than a career; it was a calling. Through his performances on stage and screen, he sought to connect with others, share human experiences, and bring light to the lives of his audience. His work was a testament to his belief in the power of storytelling and its ability to uplift and inspire. His most recent work was Acorn and the related documentary Create or Die: The Making of Acorn, both currently streaming on Amazon.

A wake for Raj will be held on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 2pm – 6pm at Temples-Halloran Funeral Home in Columbia, SC. We invite all who were touched by his spirit to share a quick memory with those in attendance.

His funeral will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 12pm at Our Lady of The Hills Catholic Church followed by a burial service at Bush River Memorial Gardens, both in Columbia, SC.
